Sketches Worth A Thousand Words

Are you a visual learner?  Apparently some 65% of the population are considered visual learners.  Visuals can amplify learning, memory, and understanding.  Our brains process visuals faster than text, so even if you are not a "visual learner" chances are you will get more out of something that uses diagrams, tables, images, drawings, and sketches too.

It turns out that sketches can be an incredibly efficient mode for learning about money.  Author Carl Richards, a Certified Financial Planner®, who for many years was known as SKETCH GUY at the New York Times, has written and illustrated a new book called Your Money: Reimagining Wealth in 101 Simple Sketches.  At OnTrack, we are known to like Carl's sketches.  We have several of them adorning our office walls.  And so it is not entirely surprising that this book speaks to us or maybe the better thing to say is that it signals to us some important themes about money.

We will highlight just one of the 101 sketches here in this blog.  In fact, we are super happy to report that we have been talking about this one sketch for years.  It is called Days or Decades.  It is such an important concept to us that we added it to the core values of OnTrack Wealth Management last year, calling it Decades, Not Days precisely because it embodies the mode of thinking we employ for our clients.  In the book, Carl says, "The greatest investors ignore the noise and get paid for doing so."  We love that and believe it to be true!  It all starts with thinking and then acting with a long-term vision.

As for the rest of the book, you will have to check it out.  Let us know which sketches you find most interesting, inspiring, annoying or otherwise impactful. We would love to hear your opinions.
